In an era of globalization, exchange of culture between different countries is very common and this is truly making the world a global place to live in. This is one of the reasons that Latin American dance forms such as salsa and jazz are fast infectious up with the interest of many Indian dancers more than ever the youngsters. But that does not mean that Indian dance forms are trailing out. The way we Indians are now getting more fascinated towards Latin American dance forms, similarly foreigners too are getting attracted towards Indian classical dance forms. Indian classical dance forms are gaining immense popularity amongst foreign dancers.
The beauty of Indian classical dance forms are reaching out to foreign countries where dance forms such as Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi etc. are being adopted by foreign dancers. Indian classical dance forms have become fashion among next generation especially in Southeast Asia and Western countries. They are getting attracted towards Indian dance forms for the mysticism attached with them.
In fact this is very surprising that there are many foreign dancers teaching Indian classical dances in Indian institutes only. One of the best examples is of Justine McCarthy who is a leading bharatnatyam dancer and one of the senior most teachers at Bharatiya Kala Kendra. Many Indians living in foreign countries learn classical dance forms to feel like Indian and get connected to their culture. The exponent of bharatnatyam and odissi dance forms in Malaysia, Ramli Ibrahim have observed the rising involvement of Indians in Indian classical dance forms in countries like Singapore , Malaysia and Indonesia. Indian culture is expanding in its forms and styles giving it a new contemporary style which caters to the like and understanding of modern Indian audience.
Many foreign dancers come to India to learn Indian dance forms and end up staying in India only because of the connection they eventually develops with India and its culture. Many foreign artists even make tours all over the world with other dancers or their company members to promote Indian dance forms. In fact many dance academies in foreign countries now have Indian dance as part of their curriculum.
Indian Council for Cultural Exchange (ICCR) the Indian government body, which works for the promotion of Indian dance forms have worked hard for the promotion of Indian culture outside. And they often invite classical dancers from outside country to perform in India. With the current scenario, it seems that Indian classical dance has a long way to go and it not going to get lost with so many admirers of it who are dedicated and committed towards it.
